How Long Do Timber Sash Windows Last?

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

If you’re looking into buying timber sash windows then this question will be right at the top of your list. With the availability of beautiful PVC-U sash windows like ours here at Bygone Collection, (which are aesthetically almost indistinguishable from authentic timber counterparts), you’d be justified in asking yourself ‘are timer windows actually worth the money?’ Well here at Bygone, we firmly believe that they are, as they can provide many years of beauty and functionality for your home. Of course, just how long they last for depends entirely on the following factors –

Quality of Timber

You may not know the difference to look at, but in terms of longevity, different standards of wood have different life spans. It has been said that, as a rule, softwood which has been grown quickly for maximum profit tends to be weaker and more susceptible to decay and rot than slow grown hardwoods sourced through the official channels. Whilst this can be true of illegally sourced softwood timber, at Bygone it’s not the case.

That’s because the only softwood we use to create our sashes is European Redwood which has been produced in accordance with the Forestry Stewardship Council’s (FSC) ‘Chain of Custody’ programme, which tracks, monitors and accredits legal logging worldwide.

This means it’s a quality product which will last. Remember that we also use high quality hardwoods for sash window construction, wherever required.

Preservation

If untreated timber comes into contact with a moisture level of 21% or more, then it will begin to absorb water at an alarming rate. This opens untreated timber frames up to rot and insect infestation, which will greatly reduce their lifespan.

Thankfully, preservation techniques like ours can help, as they consist primarily of treatment with Boron wood preservative – a naturally occurring product which is so effective we provide a 30 year guarantee against rot and fungal damage for sashes treated with it. The solution allows the wood to breathe whilst repelling the elements, ensuring that wood looks great throughout its life.

Design

The final factor in how long your sash windows last for, this refers to the life enhancing features implemented at the design and manufacturing stage. For example, the very best sashes include anti- capillary and pressure grooves, as well as sloping bottom rails which encourage rainwater to run off the product, rather than pooling. Here at Bygone, our experience and technical ability is combined to create windows which can last for as many as 50 – 70 years, if cared for properly by you, the lucky owner.

Double Glazed Sash Windows Henley

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Ever since its inception, double glazing has been used increasingly in domestic, commercial and industrial properties due to the various advantages it has. These are now widely known to a limited degree, but it’s important to have all of the facts from an industry specialist like the team here at Samson Windows before you finally invest in windows Henley and the surrounding areas. With over 15 years experience in the industry we’re often questioned by prospective buyers regarding our double glazed sashes and the benefits to a home which our range can bring.

Thermal Insulation

Of course the most well known benefit of double glazed sash windows like ours at Samson Windows is the level of thermal insulation which they provide. Double glazing consists of two panes of glazed constructed together with a layer of inert gas in between. This gas serves to block the transference of heat, meaning that indoor heat is kept in and outdoor cold is kept out.

Reducing the amount of heat lost through your windows in this way helps keep your home warm and therefore reduces heating bills a noticeable amount. Double glazing is so efficient at insulating in this way that the government is looking into a scheme which awards homeowners money to buy new windows, the repayments for which are made from future savings on energy bills.

Soundproofing

It’s a little known fact that rooms with windows which are double glazed are significantly quieter where outdoor noise is concerned; single glazed and older windows tend to let in both draughts and street noise more readily.

Here at Samson Windows we provide beautiful sashes which offer both of these benefits and much more. If you’re looking for sash windows Henley and nearby then we can help. Simply fill out the online enquiry form on our website or give the experienced team a call to discuss how you can appropriate the advantages of double glazing.

The History of Sash Windows

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

If you haven’t studied for an architectural degree or worked in the fenestration industry then the history of sash windows is probably of little concern to you. However, if you’re thinking about having this style of window installed into your home or property, then looking at how designs and manufacturing techniques have evolved over time can give clues regarding the quality of windows produced today. Here at Bygone Collection, we’re dedicated to remaining at the forefront of everything to do with sashes, so we feel we’re well placed to offer a potted history of the window style.

Beginnings

It must be said that the lineage of the sash window is not easy to trace, and accounts differ regarding the type’s origins. However, most experts agree that rudimentary sashes originated in Medieval Europe, where they were horizontal in nature and contained no glass.

Developments

As time progressed toward the mid 16th Century, the vertical style most common today prevailed, and glass was inserted into the panes to make sashes more recognisable as a window. Unfortunately, this glass was thick and unevenly blown, making windows extremely heavy to lift – a far cry from our elegantly framed sash windows complete with their premium double glazing!

However the sophistication of sash windows did increase, as demand from wealthy members of society for better and more beautiful designs grew. Soon basic pulley and weight systems were introduced, although it wasn’t until somewhere between 1700 and 1800 that carpenters devised a way of concealing these within the window frames themselves.

Legacy

During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries innovations in glass manufacturing methods allowed glaziers to produce larger, thinner and strong panes of glass. This led to the development of the recognisable sash window style we see today, such as the six panes per sash Georgian style available to view on our product gallery pages.

You might notice that Bygone Collection sash windows also feature continuous ‘horns’ on the underside of the top sash. This was a feature originally introduced because glazing innovations had led to larger panes of glass being used in windows; frames needed to be substantial enough to support these.

It’s evident that the constant popularity of the sash style of window has led to innovation after innovation throughout the centuries. Here at Bygone, we feel that traditional touches (such as continuous horns and arched designs) are an essential part of the finely crafted authenticity on offer from both our PVC-U and timber sash windows – for more information please don’t hesitate to get in touch today.

How to Care for your Sash Windows

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Here at Bygone Collection we’re dedicated to providing windows of which homeowners can be proud for many years to come. When you’ve selected and purchased new sash windows yourself, it’s only natural to take a certain degree of pride in the beauty and elegance they bring to your property. Your house is your family’s home, and there’s every reason to care for it. That’s why, as time passes it’s important to look after your sashes properly. If you take care of them, both uPVC and timber windows will look fabulous for many years – and properly cared for windows will operate efficiently for longer too. In this article we look at caring for your windows in order to safeguard them for the future.

It’s recommended that you clean your sashes thoroughly every couple of weeks. Before you do so, make sure you consult your manufacturer’s guidelines regarding windows care, and avoid any cleaning products you’re not sure about.

Start on the inside of the windows and using a damp cloth, clean every part of the window – both the glass and the frame. This helps to remove any built up dirt, especially on the edges of the windows, which prevents them sticking. Take extra when cleaning the outside of your windows; never use unsafe equipment, never over reach yourself and always clean externally from within the building wherever possible.

There are also some things you can do during use to keep your windows in good condition, such as avoiding opening sashes during heavy rain.
Our uPVC products are completely waterproof and our timber windows are treated with Boron wood preservative which protects against fungal attack for up to 30 years. However other windows and sashes over 30 years old could suffer from fungal damage and/or rot if they’re exposed to moisture on a regular basis. This can’t be avoided where the outside of windows is concerned, but a little care goes a long way in terms of the inner side.

Overall, windows treated with respect and used appropriately will not only keep you warm but will look effortlessly stylish as decades pass. For more information on our sash windows, or to speak to us regarding how to care for your new windows please use the form on our ‘Contact Us’ page.

Sash Windows: 1st October Building Regulations

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

A short while ago we wrote an update  regarding governmental revisions to the existing Building Regulations covering replacement windows and doors. We were pleased to announce that our sash windows,  both PVC – U and timber already conformed to the new regulations due to our historical commitment to eco-friendliness and premium quality windows. Now that the regulations are just a few short weeks away (coming into effect on 1st October), it’s now more important than ever that our readership understands what to look for to ensure a specialist is fully compliant. There are a few checkable accreditations to look out for.

WER Licence

Providers displaying this label are supplying products which have been checked and tested by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) meaning that the WER details displayed will be verified. This licence costs money to acquire, so beware of unscrupulous contractors who may neglect to invest in it in order to save. As with any accreditation, if it’s a genuine standard for which they’ve worked, then the company in question will be quick and eager to provide evidence of its authenticity. Bygone (Masterframe) accreditations can be checked on the BFRC website.

Verified U – values

Bear in mind that the U – value, effectively the amount of heat lost through a window, can also be demonstrated on a products BFRC label. However, CE marking under product standard EN 14351 – 1 is also a valid form of U – Value certification.

Here at Bygone we’re fully verified under the BFRC which means that they’ve tested the insulating qualities of your new sash windows using complex simulations.

As the new regulations approach experts predict a level of uncertainty amongst companies in the industry as they attempt to refine their products in order to meet the regulations. Avoid being caught out in the clamour by investing in Bygone sash windows which have met new standards for some time now; for more information please fill out the enquiry form on our website.
