Road Surfacing Birmingham: What to Consider Before Investing

Monday, September 26th, 2011

The condition of a road is very important, and should be maintained at all costs to prevent unnecessary accidents from occurring due to neglect. Yet, with the sheer amount of road traffic, weight, and speed of traffic affecting the road’s surface, it can be hard to keep on top of it. So, when contracting the services of a professional like ourselves here at CR MacDonald, we appreciate that there are numerous considerations to be made before investing in road surfacing Birmingham.

Type of Traffic

Obviously if you are contemplating surfacing the road, the condition has deteriorated beyond repair and the concrete Birmingham may be cracked and damaged. Yet, before you invest you will need to consider the type of traffic which the road in question receives on a daily basis. Is it a main road that receives a high volume of traffic? Is that traffic consist of mainly cars, or does it include heavy goods vehicles? What speed is the majority of traffic travelling at? Does it lead up to a roundabout or a junction?

All of these questions are important, and by answering them you can identify what type of road surface you will require.

Additional Considerations

Always ensure that you contract the services of a CITB, EXOR and CSCS accredited engineer. This will assure a high level of quality in the work they perform, and ensure they comply with safety regulations.

If the condition of a road has significantly deteriorated then a skilled engineer from CR MacDonald should be called in order to inspect the damage and ascertain the best method to repair the road.

Step One: Check the Condition of the Road

Upon contact, our engineers will come and inspect the condition of the road. Key areas of concern will be highlighted and depending on the overall condition, repair or complete resurfacing will be implemented as required. If you are a domestic household looking to repair your driveway, you could also contact a timber merchants Birmingham and revamp your garden with a new decking area while you’re in the process.

Step Two: The Process of Surface Dressing

Surface dressing is one of the most common methods used in road maintenance. Generally speaking, the cost of road dressing is relatively low in comparison to a complete resurface and the application is quick and direct. Normally, the process involves a layer of binder being placed on the original road’s surface. The binder acts as an adhesive when the layer of stone chippings is layered on top. The stone is then pushed into the binder using a roller.

New Anti-Slip Surfaces on A379 Exeter Footbridge

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Anyone who has been fortunate enough to visit Plymouth or Exeter in recent months or anyone who lives within the area will have noticed the A379 has undergone some renovation work to ensure that there’s a smoother ride for the heavy traffic. However, it isn’t just the road which has undergone an improvement; the footbridge near to Rydon Lane has also been enhanced. Here at Thortech, because of our experience in providing unbeatable anti-slip surfaces, we were tasked with the job of carrying out the surface improvements on the footbridge, with specifications to provide a suitable anti-slip surface.

We were extremely pleased to be tasked with the job of creating and surfacing the bridge, as part of the council’s extensive highways improvement package. We believe the contract shows that through our extensive experience within the industry, we’ve built up an unbeatable reputation as a leading provider of anti-slip surfaces.

Following a detailed consultation and the construction of the bridge proper by the contractor Tema on behalf of the Devon County Council; our experienced team completed our side of the work by providing an unbeatable level of anti-slip surfacing.

Before the resin could be applied, we carried out extensive checks to ensure that the construction was free from any contamination, which could have affected the application of the anti-slip surface. Once we were satisfied the area was properly prepared, we applied a Bimagrip anti-slip surface complete with substrate enhancement, which has been designed to offer an unbeatable anti-slip surface come rain or shine.

Along with providing an excellent anti-slip finish, the Bimagrip resin which was applied to the A379 bridge is also a quick drying substance, which made it ideal to be used in this situation, where pedestrian use soon after construction was likely.

Along with providing one of our anti-slip surfaces to the A379 footbridge, here at Thortech we’re able to provide the same level of professionalism and quality surfaces to a range of areas, including driveways and car parks. For more information on the specialist contracts we’ve completed, see our post about the quality surfaces we provided for the Tor Hafinia sea-vessel.

Birmingham Commercial Car park Resurfacing

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

If you work in a large office block or complex alongside many other employees, you’ll realise the value of a properly laid car park. Without private car parks, companies across the country would be in chaos, as employees and visitors alike struggle to park in town and city locations. Of course, if you have your own commercial car park then only half the battle is won; it’s important to maintain the surface too. Here at CR MacDonald Surfacing we appreciate that clients want to keep the quality of their car park surface high but struggle to do so without heavily disrupting the routine and productivity of their company and its employees. Luckily, we’re seasoned experts in Birmingham commercial car park resurfacing – we have the solution.

By working quickly and adapting our schedule around our customers, we can reduce car park downtime and save you money. At the same time, we consistently employ staff of the highest calibre, and use materials befitting professional commercial car parks.
If you’re looking at resurfacing your car park, you have two main options; industrial grade macadam or asphalt.

Macadam

Offering highly professional aesthetics, macadam can be laid by hand or using machinery, depending on the size of the plot itself. Ramps, different levels and even contrasting colour zones can be designed and created by the CR MacDonald team, before the entire area is finished using hand or ride on rollers. Macadam car parks are strong and can last for up to 30 years, depending upon the intensity of usage.

Asphalt

If you’re looking to resurface, asphalt might be the best solution for Birmingham commercial car park resurfacing, as the material lends itself to resurfacing rather than construction from scratch. Perhaps you’re in need of a quick project turnaround; our asphalt service could be of interest too, as in many cases limited excavation of the existing area is required. Following the construction of the new surface, your car park should be left for a period of between one and seven days, depending upon the meteorological conditions at the time.

The History of Commercial Mcadam

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

When thinking about famous exports from Scotland, the first two things that are likely to pop into your head are whisky and haggis -two great exports which are enjoyed by millions around the world. Something you may not think about, or may not know is that everyday billions of people around the world use one of Scotland’s most famous exports; macadam, and here at CR MacDonald we’re experts in providing macadam Birmingham to ensure that when you visit England’s second city, you have a smooth drive.

Around 1820, John Loudon McAdam a road builder and engineer in Scotland went one step further than his fellow countryman Thomas Telford and Frenchman Pierre-Marie-Jérôme Trésaguet, and produced a road surface which didn’t rely just on layer upon layer of rock. Instead he found that compacted soil would be able to hold the weight of the traffic above it, so long as it had a protective covering (for which he used stone) and so the first form of macadam was born.

After McAdam had pioneered the road surface that we’ve all grown accustomed too, other road engineers started to use it, but added their own touches to make the road more stable and secure. For example Richard Edgeworth filled the gaps in the road with dust, stone and water to provide a smoother finish, whilst after the introduction of motor vehicles, Edgar Purnell Hooley’s patented tarmac was introduced and the current macadam Birmingham we here at CR MacDonald use was officially born.

At CR MacDonald, when we lay the macadam Birmingham that we use, John Loudon McAdam’s methods of laying the perfect road still resonate strongly. This is, because we want to ensure that whether we’re providing a new pathway, driveway or highway, it is of the smoothest condition possible and will remain durable for many years to come.

Decorative Concrete Resurfacing Birmingham

Monday, July 26th, 2010

When thinking about redecorating the exterior of your property a decorative concrete driveway is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. Rather, concrete is renowned for its strength and durability which makes it perfect for foundations for buildings and cars. However, if the work is carried out by experienced contractors like the C R Macdonald team, concrete driveways and forecourts can look smart, professional and well looked after.  We specialise in resurfacing Birmingham and the surrounding areas and have the skill to deliver a flawless finish with high quality concrete.

It’s true that more conventional driveway materials can create an aesthetically pleasing impression. Block paving for example is a popular method of resurfacing Kidderminster and elsewhere which can be used to create a variety of patterns. However block paving takes a long time to complete and is highly susceptible to fading and weathering, falling prey to weeds in the grooves and generally breaking up.

Concrete, however, is much more hardwearing and the C R MacDonald team can advise clients to ensure that their resurfacing Wolverhampton utilises the right mix for their needs. For example, we can vary mix strengths according to the proposed usage of the plot in question; for use by heavy industrial vehicles we might recommend a stiff concrete mix which is reinforced with heavy duty mesh for total longevity.

As concrete is delivered in a near liquid form and subsequently sets, it is not prone to weed growth like other types of driveway materials.

This not only means that your forecourt or compound continues to look new long after the C R MacDonald staff members have left, but it also ensures that your property gives the impression of being clean and well maintained to visitors and customers. For more information regarding resurfacing Birmingham for any plot whatsoever, why not call the down to earth C R MacDonald team.

Playground Surfacing Dudley

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Now that the clocks have gone forward and summer is chasing spring across the country, millions of school children nationwide are looking forward to those six weeks of bliss – the summer holidays. This long break is an excellent opportunity to carry out playground surfacing Dudley, so that schools can be ready for the heavy footfalls of the returning masses. We at CR MacDonald are an industry leading company which undertake small and large surfacing projects for the commercial, domestic and civil sectors, including industrial forecourts, road surfacing and playground surfacing.

Governing bodies looking for surfacing Rugby should consider the fact that we have over 20 years of experience in the industry. With a large job like a playground, untrustworthy competitors can leave schools with playgrounds that are unable to cope with the years of constant use required. Pot holes, cracking and surface deterioration not only endanger youngsters and breach Health and Safety Regulations, but could also lead to costly and inconvenient emergency repairs in the near future during term time.

The best way to get an idea of whether or not a company can offer the level of service that you require is to log on to their website or speak to them over the phone. For example, here at CR MacDonald we urge customers to contact us for an informal discussion about surfacing needs, and we can also carry out professional site surveys for a more comprehensive idea of which course of action to take. With our extensive accreditations clients can look forward to receiving an extensive, quality service in surfacing Walsall.

Unlike CR MacDonald, some companies cannot supply coloured tarmacadam, which can be essential for assigning zones and livening up school playgrounds, in addition to designating areas for sports courts of all kinds. Think ahead and contact CR MacDonald, specialists in surfacing Dudley and the wider Midlands area.
